Can you still remember when the first iPhone was released? This year is the thirteenth year since the first iPhone was released in 2007. Apple has released a total of nineteen iPhones since 2007, including iPhone S and Plus models and the latest iPhone 11 line.
- iPhone: Release date – June 29, 2007
This phone had only 16GB storage. Apple had no App store then. Could only handle 128MB of memory. The camera was 2.0 megapixels (MP).
- iPhone 3G: Release date – July 11, 2008
iPhone 3G was not different than the original iPhone. But now there was no App Store. This phone was named because of its 3G connectivity, which meant that you had a better connection to the internet on your iPhone 3G.
- iPhone 3G S: Release date – June 19, 2009
Apple increased the storage on its iPhones from 16GB to 32GB on the iPhone 3G S. 16GB was not enough to store photos, music, and apps. The camera was increased from 2MP to 3MP and they added video recording. Apple also added voice control.
- iPhone 4: Release date – June 24, 2010
This iPhone 4 was the first iPhone to have a front-facing camera. Little did Apple know that selfies will take over the world. The iPhone 4 also had a retina display. It had 512 MB memory, it could handle more than even the iPhone 3GS, which only had 256MB of memory. The design had begun to change with the iPhone 4, but 32GB was still the maximum amount of storage the iPhone could hold. Camera size increased to 5MP on this phone.
- iPhone 4 S: Release date – October 14, 2011
The camera increased from 5MP on iPhone 4 to 8MP on the iPhone 4S. Apple also introduced the 64 GB storage option but still kept the memory at 512MB. Video could then be recorded in 1080p. It sold for 4 million units in its first week.
- iPhone 5: Release date – September 21, 2012
The new iPhone 5 sold 5 million units in its first week. The camera size was still at 8MP but the memory increased to 1GB. iPhone 5 had LTE connectivity. Apple also introduced the Lightning connector with the iPhone 5. The size of the iPhone increased in the iPhone 5 model. All previous generation’s displays were 3.5 inches but the iPhone 5 was 4 inches.
- iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c: Release date – September 20, 2013
Between these two phones, Apple sold 9 million units in the first week of sales. iPhone 5c was meant to be slightly more affordable and had a plastic shell. It was available in four different colors. The iPhone 5s, on the other hand, introduced Touch ID, dual flash and slow-motion video. It also had an M7 motion coprocessor that helped in saving battery life.
- iPhone 6 and 6 Plus: Release date – September 19, 2014
iPhone 6 internal specs were very similar to those of the iPhone 5s. But it had a larger screen and an even larger size called 6 Plus. The Retina display became HD and the option to get an iPhone with 128GB of storage became available. This phone model sold 10 million units in its first week.

Camera size increased from 8MP to 12MP on the iPhone 6s. Memory increased from 1GB to 2GB. iPhone 6 had some bending issues (#bendgate), which made Apple add 7000 series aluminum to the iPhone 6S. This phone also had a 3D Touch.
- iPhone SE: Release date – March 31, 2016
This phone also had all the specifications in iPhone 6s in a small package but no 3D Touch. It was introduced as a more affordable option for consumers.
These phone models had 32GB of storage that also went up to 256GB. It also introduced a new shiny Jet-Black color. The iPhone 7 Plus was a more popular phone than other Plus models, due to its new dual-camera which had an improved zoom feature and Portrait Mode, which helped users to take impressive pictures using Depth of Field. This new phone had Ear Pods.
These phones introduced us to wireless charging with the glass cover on the back on the iPhone.
- iPhone X: Release date – November 3, 2017
The iPhone X had an extra front-facing camera. That lets users take amazing selfies in Portrait mode.
These were upgrades along the lines of the iPhone X. Both models had the front-facing camera too for Portrait mode selfies. The biggest upgrade was the A12 bionic chip which increased the processing power while decreasing the battery drain.
- iPhone XR: Release date – October 26, 2018
this iPhone was smaller than the XS and XS Max but still bigger than the 7 and 8 Plus. It had more colors than the XS or XS Max.
- iPhone 11: Release date – September 20, 2019
This is the least expensive of Apple’s annual line, but still has enough new features to be in the running for 2019’s most popular iPhone. The device features a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina display and comes in six colors. It had a second camera on the back of the iPhone 11, both 12MP and offering wide and ultra-wide lenses.
- iPhone 11 Pro Max: Release date – September 20, 2019
Apple’s largest and most expensive phone of 2019 is the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The display is Apple’s Super Retina XDR, as with the 11 Pro, but sized at 6.5-inches. The Pro Max features the same, three-lens camera setup as the 11 Pro, as well as the same color choices, making size nearly the only difference between the devices.
